71st birthday of Prof. Mobin Khan observed
31 May was the 71st birthday of Prof Mobin Khan, Father of Hepatology in Bangladesh. Hepatology Society, Dhaka, Bangladesh celebrated the day by arranging a scientific seminar and awareness campaign on Fatty Liver and organizing a Free Clinic for poor patients.
The seminar was also organized in advance observance of the first International NASH (nonalcoholic steatohepatitis) Day (to be observed globally on June 12). The seminar was held at CIRDAP auditorium, Dhaka. Prof. Mobin Khan was in the chair. Prof. Nooruddin Ahmad, Chairman, Department of Hepatology, BSMMU was the chief guest and Mr. Amir Khasru, Dhaka representative of VOA, was the special guest. Prof. Mohammad Ali, Prof. Brig General (Retd) Sk Md. Bahar Hussain and Dr. M. Motahar Hossain were present as experts. The program was anchored by Dr. Saiful Islam Alin.
In the seminar, Dr. Shahinul Alam and his team released the findings of a study covering 2,782 urban and rural people of Bangladesh. They said that 33.86 per cent non-alcoholic fatty liver prevalence in Bangladesh was much higher than the global average prevalence of 25 per cent. The speakers expressed concern that non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD) has become a silent threat to life in Bangladeshis. Only healthy diet and regular exercise could stop the early stage of NAFLD from turning into NASH. The issue must be incorporated into our national health agenda and mass campaign launched to raise people’s awareness about the disease.
About 50 poor patients were consulted by hepatologist members of the society at the Society Secretariat. At Iftar, a cake was cut by Prof. Mobin Khan to celebrate his birthday. We wish a long and healthy life of this legendary hepatologist.
